Photo taken in Bologna, Italy July 2024, during an assignment for the New York Times, shows Baian Azoum, 4, with her aunt and caretaker Fatma Hassanain, 34 at their flat shared with another refugee family from Nigeria.
A day before Baian’s fourth birthday, she was found with her head buried under rubble, following an Israeli bombardment that hit her Gaza neighborhood in December 2023. Her mother and father, as well as her 7-year-old twin siblings and her 7-month-old sister, were killed in the attack. Baian sustained wounds to her head, broken teeth, and a fractured leg. She still has a limp. She lives with her aunt Fatima in Italy, where she’s been receiving treatment.
