Photo taken in Weimar, Germany in February 2017, during an assignment for The New York Times shows Joullanar (standing), a Syrian resident in Germany since 2009, translating to Syrian refugee women including Mahdiyah (central seated) and Haifa (left) during a Teatime with Heart meeting.
The meetings were created by Andrea Wagner (in pink pussyhat), who runs Weimar’s Equal Opportunities office. She wanted to create a safe space for Syrian women to meet their German peers, forge friendships, exchange ideas and answer questions about childbirth and care and other issues they might not want to discuss around men.
