Peter Maass

Journalist

Peter Maass is the author of Love Thy Neighbor: A Story of War, which chronicled his experiences covering the war in Bosnia, and Crude World: The Violent Twilight of Oil, about the ways oil shapes the world. Maass has written in-depth stories about war and politics for The New Yorker, New York Times Magazine and New York Review of Books. The countries he has reported from include Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, North Korea, Saudi Arabia and Russia. He has taught at Princeton and Columbia universities, was a Visiting Regents Lecturer at the University of California at Berkeley, and a fellow at both the American Academy in Berlin and the Shorenstein Center at Harvard. In 2012 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. He currently is working on a book about war imagery in the era of cellphones and drones.
