Rwanda, 1994
Dimensions: 105 mm x 165 mm
This notebook has witnessed the horrors of one of the worst massacres
of Rwanda’s 1994 genocide, at the Nyarubuye Catholic parish complex. Thousands of ethnic Tutsis sought refuge here, only to be killed by Hutu militiamen armed with clubs, machetes, and grenades. As I photographed the bodies – their remains already dissolving into human fat and infested with the fleas of the dead – this notebook was tucked in my belt or waist pouch, and pulled out to record specific details, like the bloody fingerprints on the baptism ledger.
