Photographer, AFP

I was born in Kabul in 1981 while the war against USSR’s red army has already started. As my father was supporting the freedom movements, communist regime jailed him and we had to leave the country. We fled to Iran. I finished my high school in 1996 while the “Reformists Movement” has been born in Iran and I joined them as a young political activist. After a while, I realized that I have to record the events going on around me, as part of the history, and I chose photography. I started documenting Afghan refugees life in Mashhad. Then 9/11 happened and changed my life. I entered into Afghanistan in the beginning of 2002 and joined Aina, a cultural center funded by photographer Reza Deghati. I started learning photography and working with photographer Manoocher Deghati. I joined Agence France-Presse (AFP) in 2007 and tried to cover the whole war in Afghanistan. I both embedded with US troops and travelled to far and poor villages and experienced their life. I had many exhibitions, including two in Berlin and one at Visa pour l’Image in Perpignan, and was awarded in 2012 the Pulitzer Prize (Breaking News), the World Press Photo (2nd Prize for Breaking News), the POYi (1st Prize for News), among others. I will continue to cover the most complicated war in the world.
