Granada TV ‘World In Action’ documentary series 1979-85. Won Royal Television Society Award, 1985, for a film about Northern Ireland.

The Guardian / The Observer: Rome and Southern Europe Correspondent for the Guardian 1990-4. Covered wars in Iraq and the Balkans, winning every major award in British journalism.

  • 1994/5 and 1997-2003: US Bureau Chief for The Observer. Covered Oklahoma bomb and 9/11, and worked much in Mexico, Haiti, Cuba, etc. Won International Reporter of the Year 1996.
  • 2003-2005: Covered invasion of Iraq and insurgency.
  • 2007-present: specialize in narco-traffic, Mexico-US border, cartel wars and laundering of drug profits.
  • 2012: Won the Ryszard Kapuscinski award for ‘Amexica: War Along the Borderline’.
  • 2015: Shortlisted for the same prize for ‘The War is Dead, Long Live the War: Bosnia the Reckoning’.
