Srebrenica, 30 Years

Conflict: Bosnia

Photography exhibition by Damir Šagolj
Organized by WARM Foundation and University of Sarajevo, in partnership with Gallery 11/07/95

Marking the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, this major two-part exhibition by award-winning Bosnian photographer Damir Šagolj will be presented at two locations in Sarajevo, from June 30 to July 14, 2025. The project is part of both the official commemoration program coordinated by the University of Sarajevo and the WARM Festival 2025. It is realized in collaboration with Gallery 11/07/95, which has worked for over a decade on the memory of the genocide through art and photography.

The first installation will take place at the Sarajevo railway station, on Trg žrtava srebreničkog genocida. It features twelve three-meter-wide panoramic photographs of execution sites around Srebrenica. These abstract yet hauntingly suggestive images echo the silence, vastness, and trauma embedded in the landscape. Their large-scale format and powerful visual language engage directly with the public space, especially during the week of remembrance.

The second part of the exhibition will be held at the Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts. It presents a broader body of Šagolj’s work – around 150 photographs, in various formats, taken in and around Srebrenica over the course of three decades. Together, these images create a long, quiet meditation on violence, absence, and the act of remembering.

Both exhibitions are designed and curated by Lejla Hodžić, who has worked closely with the author to shape the visual and emotional rhythm of the project.

In parallel, the project includes a video essay directed by Danis Tanović, combining Šagolj’s photographs with poetry by Faruk Šehić. This video will be screened at the National Theatre in Sarajevo as a prologue to a special concert by the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra, held during the official memorial week and as part of WARM Festival.
